Obama & Abidjan [mise à jour - update]

Devant les chances croissantes du Parti Démocrate américain de nommer un candidat d’origine kenyane, (le père d’Obama étant un Luo de la province de Nyanza à la pointe sud-ouest du Kenya), la campagne présidentielle américaine intéresse de plus en plus les Abidjanais.Hier soir, j’ai discuté le sujet avec une personne du cru qui semblait faire preuve de désillusion devant l’hypothèse d’une candidature Obama. Non qu’Obama ne représentait pas la fierté africaine, parce que d’après mon interlocuteur, c’était bel et bien le cas. Mais parce que selon lui les électeurs finiront par sanctionner ses « racines africaines ». Il ne sont pas près pour un président d’origine étrangère. Peut-être que la prochaine génération sera prête.

Personnellement, je pense qu’ils sont prêts. Quoi qu’il en soit, je garderai ce sujet à l’œil pour voir comment l’opinion de la rue évolue ici.

With increased chances of seeing the US Democratic party nominate a candidate of Kenyan origin (Obama’s father is a Luo from Nyanza province at the South Western tip of Kenya), the US Presidential race is drawing attention in Abidjan.

Yesterday night, I discussed with a local who seemed to be disenchanted with Barack Obama. Not because he wasn’t representing African pride, because according to my interlocutor he was definitely. But because according to my interlocutor, voters would end up sanctionning his African roots. They’re not ready for a president of foreign origin. Maybe the next generation will be.

Personally I tend to think they are ready. Only time will tell. Anyway I will keep this topic in mind and see how the word on the street evolves in here.
