Les Fanico, les blanchisseurs d’Abidjan.

Dans le nord de l’agglomération Abidjan, on trouve le parc national (ou forêt) du Banco. A l’aurée de la forêt, tout au bout d’un bras de lagune, en contrebas de la grand route, on rencontre chaque jour les Fanico. Ils sont dans l’eau chaude jusqu’à la taille et brassent le linge pendant des heures sous le soleil. Les Fanico sont les blanchisseurs d’Abidjan.

On leur donne ce nom en raison du savon de Marseille qu’ils utilisent. La savon Fanico est produit par la société Cosmivoire, une entreprise locale implantée à Abidjan depuis 1974.

Qu’ils soient Burkinabé, Guinéen, ou Nigérien, les blanchisseurs sont pour la plupart des étrangers. Les Fanico demandent entre 25 et 50 CFA la pièce de vêtement.

Après avoir lavé et rincé le linge dans l’eau de la lagune, les Fanico font sécher le linge à même le sol. On ne voit alors plus un carré d’herbe ni de terre, ce qui offre aux yeux une étrange mosaïque de couleur tout alentour.

Fanico, Abidjan’s launderers.

In the north of Abidjan metropolitan area lies the Banco national parc (a.k.a. Banco forest). Everyday, on the edge of the forest, at the tip of a narrow water band, below the motorway, one can find the Fanico. Everyday, they are in the waist high warm water, laundering for long hours under the sun. Fanico are Abidjan’s launderers.

Their name, Fanico, comes from the bar of soap they use. Fanico soap is produced by Cosmivoire, a local business operating from Abidjan since 1974.

Be they from Burkina Faso, Guinea Conakry or Niger, launderers are mostly foreigners from the region. Fanico typicaly ask between 25 and 50 CFA per piece of clothing.

After laundering and rincing the clothes in the lagoon water, they dry them on the ground. The drying items offer a rare mosaic of colors around since no patch of grass or dirt remains to be seen.
